What type of jewellery repair services do we offer?

If properly taken care of, high quality jewellery can retain its shape, sparkle and integrity for years and years - especially statement pieces that are only worn on special occasions.

However, time does eventually takes its toll on jewellery. Sudden damage can occur in the form of drops, knocks or exposure to harsh environments, which may crack or discolour metals and gemstones. Meanwhile, the friction generated from your jewellery rubbing against your body is enough to gradually erode the metal of frequently worn pieces such as engagement rings and wedding bands.

Regardless of what type damage your jewellery has sustained, there’s every chance that our master jeweller, Alex, will be able to restore it to its former glory.

Some of our repair services include:

  • Replacing broken or worn claws on your rings
  • Removing both deep and superficial scratches from most types of jewellery
  • Repairing worn down ring bands (reshanking)
  • Rhodium plating your white gold jewellery to restore its sparkle
  • Fixing clasps on chains and bracelets
  • Replacing broken, cracked and chipped gemstones
  • Replacing lost gemstones such as diamonds, rubies and more
  • Re-setting loose gemstones

...and much, much more. Our repair services are uniquely tailored to each individual piece of jewellery, so for a better idea of your options send us an email at repairs@silverstonejewellery.co.nz.

What are some common signs that I need to repair my jewellery?

In some instances, it will be painfully obvious that you need to repair your jewellery. The metal might be cracked, a clasp could have snapped, a gemstone may have fallen out, and so on.

However, in some circumstances, it may not be so obvious. For example, if you’ve noticed that your ring has recently started catching on your clothing, it could very well be that one (or more) of the claws has started to come loose, which means that the gemstone is potentially at risk of falling out. Other subtle signs that indicate your jewellery may require repairs is the band of your ring beginning to wear thin or yellow spots starting to appear in your white gold.

Familiarising yourself with these signs and bringing your jewellery to your local Auckland jeweller can help you preempt further damage and minimise costly repairs in the future.

How much does it cost to get my jewellery fixed in Auckland?

Costs can vary significantly depending on the metal, gemstone, design, build quality and a range of other factors, but we’ll do our best here to provide you with ballpark figures for some of our most common repair services.

Please keep in mind that these are only estimates, and prices may vary.

- Reshanking

broken thin band needs reshanking reshanked gold ring band

If the shank (band) of your ring has become thin over the years from frequent wear, it will need to be replaced. To do this we cut away the damaged part of the band, make a new band and solder it together. It may be just a small part of the shank or the entire shank - we can assess this when you bring the ring to us.

We’re not exaggerating when we say that the results can be stunning. Reshanking is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to rejuvenate a ring that has been worn thin over the years.

  • Reshanking 9ct gold ring: from $360 for up to a 5mm band
  • Reshanking 18ct gold: from $440 for up to a 5mm band
  • White gold will incur an additional $75 for up to a 5mm band for rhodium plating.

- Fixing broken claws

Claw setting is a common type of gemstone setting. It allows light to pass through the stone from top to bottom, thereby accentuating the colour and shape of the gem. The claws are partly responsible for holding the gemstone in place. If they come loose or sustain damage, you risk losing the gemstone, which could be a very expensive loss.

Depending on the level of damage, we can either re-tip the claws or replace them completely.

  • Re-tipping 9ct gold claws: $40 for the first tip, $20 for each additional tip
  • Replacing 9ct claws: $50 for the first claw, $30 for each additional claw

- Rhodium plating

More or less all modern white gold is plated with rhodium, a super shiny metal that is used to coat white gold jewellery and give it that reflective, supernatural sparkle.

We can rhodium plate your jewellery and have it ready for you to wear again in just three days. The cost of this service is typically around the $75 mark for up to a 5mm band, this can vary depending on the size and thickness of the metal.
